There are few cities in the world that have the same aura and broad appeal as Amsterdam does.
Admiring the city from a canal boat or cycling around the cobbled streets or strolling around museums and sitting in cafes, a city break in Amsterdam can be defined by the transport you take and the places you visit.
There is so much culture on show and things to do, it is easy to define a break in Amsterdam simply by deciding what kind of holiday you want from the start.
Parks, Canals and Museums to Visit
One thing that immediately strikes you after arriving on cheap flights to Amsterdam is the amount of bikes there are chained to railings or locked into vast bike parks. It is the preferred mode of transport, that and the canal boats.
This in itself should give you an indication towards the way of life in the popular city. Everything is stripped back a pace. You will find a busy city centre bursting with people enjoying a city break or just going about their day-to-day business. What you won’t find is people rushing around looking stressed.
The cafes are generally populated with friends nattering over an espresso or a beer and this is the perfect place to start your day. Because Amsterdam has such a famous nightlife, it is best to squeeze your other interests in during the day. This could be a walk through Vondel Park – if there is a show on when you’re there you are in for a treat – or maybe a visit to the Heineken Museum. He latter is a great experience taking you on a very interactive tour of how a bottle of beer is made – with free samples!
It is also during the day that canal boat rides are most popular, giving visitors arriving on their flights to Amsterdam, a chance to appreciate some of the magnificent architecture that the city bestows. Keep an eye out for the buildings leaning forward with hooks at the top, these were used to bring water in from the canal in days gone by.
